Downtown Waco has been and continues to be the recipient of much investment and development in the last few years. In this area you will find the Waco Convention Center, Dr. Pepper Museum, a handful of good restaurants like Ninfas and Diamond Backs, The Waco Suspension Bridge, Indian Spring Park (which connects with Cameron Park) and several of the more common Waco wedding locations (First Baptist Waco, Columbus Ave. Baptist Church, Earl Harrison Historic home, etc.) It is also a 2-5 minute drive to Baylor Campus, the Ferrel Center, Baylor Baseball and Softball stadiums and the Texas Ranger Museum and Fort Fisher.
In this area you will find gas stations closer to the I-35 side, fast food along I-35, sit down restaurants (like Ninfa’s and Diamondbacks) are along Franklin and great Waco restaurants (like the Olive Branch and Cafe Cappucino) are in the Austin Avenue area.
Most Wacoans prefer to travel by car in this area, even if things are only a few minutes away. This might be because the weather in Waco is often hot & hotter or cold in the winter. It might be because we like our AC and our heaters
, but I do know that part of the reason is that the area around downtown (from I-35 to Franklin) is a rougher part of town.
That being said, downtown Waco is on the rise with developments, new buildings and investments popping up all the time and it will be fun to see where it goes. If you are in town for a downtown event, here is a list of the hotels that would be nearby:
